Description
Trachycarpus martianus is one of the most attractive and exotic looking of the Trachycarpus genus. Its slender, bare trunk supports a full but open crown of elegantly arching, very regular and much segmented, large fan leaves. It is quite a fast grower and easy growing.
The Nepalese form is the one to go for if available as it is alledgedly hardier due to the fact it grows at a higher altitude.
This species is named after the German botanist Karl Friedrich Phillip Martius (1794-1868).
Hardiness: Definitley not the hardiest of the Trachycarpus species. Despite it growing at up to 2,400 metres above sea level it is only hardy to about -5 degrees celsius for limited periods. Winter protection is a must in colder areas.
