Description
Phoenix canariensis is an endemic palm tree to the Canary Islands. Like all palms it is single trunked, pinnate palm that can grow to 20 metres tall in its native habitat. The trunk is generally 60-90cm in diameter when mature.
The largest one we have in the Gardens is approximately 4 metres of trunk. Interesting to note, it did survive the 2 very bad winters of 2010, whilst more juvenile ones did not. Its hardiness is about down to minus 10 degrees, but as always this is not an exact science and other factors will come into play at this extreme
Best position is in full sun and well-drained loamy, free draining soils. Keep it well watered during warm and dry periods to maximize growing results. This (along with Trachycarpus fortunei) is the best palm to start your collection.
